Greater Binghamton Airport Receives Million Dollar Federal Grant, Boosts Local Jobs

(Maine, NY) -- Broome County Executive Debbie Preston joined U.S. Senators Charles Schumer, Kirsten Gillibrand and Congressman Richard Hanna today in announcing that the Greater Binghamton Airport has been awarded a $1.023 Million Grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to make improvements to the Airport’s North Apron.

“The Greater Binghamton Airport is continuously upgrading the airfield infrastructure and looking to enhance visitor experience, as we work to provide the best service possible to our region,” said Broome County Executive Debbie Preston. “This Grant means major improvements to our Airport and good-paying jobs in our community. We will continue to fight for federal funding as BGM reaches new heights.”

The North Apron is a pavement area that provides important access to the Airport’s de-ice collection area, private hangar site, the aviation fuel farm and the Airport’s maintenance facility.

This Grant will also allow for:

Ø Aging pavement located on the North Ramp to be replaced;

Ø Drainage improvements will be completed; and

Ø New energy-efficient lighting will be installed.

In order to complete these necessary improvements, a $1.023 million grant was issued from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program (AIP).

The work will be completed by a local contractor, Boland’s Excavating & Topsoil, Conklin, NY.

In addition, McFarland Johnson Inc. of Binghamton completed the design work and will oversee the construction phase adding additional jobs for local businesses.

It is expected that 30 local jobs will result from the implementation of this project.

“For a number of reasons, it is great news that BGM has been awarded this grant. First, it will help us to upgrade aging infrastructure needed to ensure aircraft move safely at the Binghamton Airport,” said Commissioner of Aviation Carl Beardsley Jr. “In addition, local businesses and citizens will benefit from these federal dollars coming into the community.”

Work is expected to begin in mid-September and will run in conjunction with another project that will replace existing T-hangars with new structures. Both projects are expected to be completed by December of this year.
